FAQ’s

If you have any queries please take a look at our frequently asked questions below. If your question isn’t answered please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Can I make a viewing appointment to see the venue?

Yes of course! Viewing is by appointment only and you can arrange this by contacting either Rebecca via email or Pat directly by phone.  During our wedding season the best time to visit is on the Friday afternoon the day before the wedding on Saturday.  We also host open days throughout the year.

When can we come and set up for our wedding?

You are welcome to come and set up in the afternoon of the day before your wedding, so if you are getting married on a Saturday, you would be able to come on the Friday afternoon when the marquee set up will be finished.

Can we decorate the venue for our wedding?

The gardens are always beautifully presented and you are welcome to decorate as you wish to personalise the venue and create a theme or style for your day.  We would need to discuss in more detail any decoration that may have longer lasting effects on the gardens or grounds.

What time does the venue close?

The Secret Garden closes at 12pm midnight on the day of your event and you are able to leave vehicles parked overnight if required.

Do you only host weddings at The Secret Garden?

Although weddings are our most popular booking, we are also very pleased to host christenings, anniversary parties, birthdays, afternoon tea and other special occasions.

Can we get married outside in the gardens?

You and your guests are welcome to enjoy the gardens and outdoor areas on your day but, we are not able to conduct the marriage ceremony outside. For the civil ceremony, a small marquee is connected to the beautiful conservatory and chairs for your guests are set up within the marquee facing inside to where the ceremony will take place. It is a very light and open setting and feels close to marrying outside. We can accommodate blessings and humanist ceremonies within the gardens if you are already married by law.

Can we marry at The Secret Garden or is it a reception only venue?

We are licensed to hold civil ceremonies and can therefore accommodate full weddings as well as reception only events.

To hold your civil ceremony at The Secret Garden you will need to arrange a booking with the registrar.
Retford Registrar are the nominated office for our venue and they can be contacted on the following telephone number: 01777 708631

Will there be anyone else at the venue on my wedding day?

No – we pride ourselves in offering an exclusive service, so you can relax knowing that our team will be looking after you and your guests on your special day and nobody else!

Can we bring children to The Secret Garden?

Yes, absolutely! Children are very welcome at our events and they love the gardens! Naturally, we ask that they are supervised and parents are responsible for their care and behaviour.

What are the maximum guest numbers The Secret Garden can accommodate?

For a midweek event we can accommodate a maximum of 40 people.  For a weekend event we can accommodate up to 120 during the day with an additional 40 guests in the evening.

Therefore, for a wedding, the bride and groom can have up to 120 guests for their wedding ceremony and a further 40 for their evening reception.

Most weddings at The Secret Garden have between 80 and 100 guests.

Can we choose our own marquee company?

We use George Mudford and sons of Retford for our marquee requirements and have done so for several years.  They know our venue very well and reliably provide an excellent service to us and our couples.  Please contact them on the details below if you would like to discuss your requirements directly.

Do we have to use set suppliers?

We provide a very flexible service and although we have strong relationships with many highly recommended suppliers, you may choose any of the companies you wish to use which includes, but is not limited to, our caterers, florist and photographer.

Upon booking your event with us, we are very happy to provide details of our highly recommended suppliers if you would find this helpful.

We are pleased to offer a range of in-house catering options to suit a variety of tastes and styles or you can choose an external supplier if you would like.

Do you offer drinks packages?

We believe that every event is special and individual and as such we don’t offer set packages as we would rather speak to you personally and do our best to provide exactly what you would like.  We work with specialist suppliers to bring you a high quality selection of wines and can provide all of the usual drinks you would expect, alongside something a little different such as a cocktail service or Pimms reception.

Can we provide our own alcohol?

The Secret Garden provides all alcohol; alcohol cannot be brought in to the venue by couples or their guests as we are licensed but we will endeavour to supply whatever you would like. We work with specialist wine suppliers to ensure you the highest quality and we will also provide the staff to serve you and your guests. Within our venue hire fee, we provide The Coach House bar in the courtyard and a bar inside the main marquee. We also have The Yorkshireman bar in the gardens for Cocktails or Pimms/Prosecco receptions.

Can I hold my winter wedding at The Secret Garden?

At The Secret Garden we are a marquee based venue and organise weddings and events during the months of May to September – the gardens are at their most beautiful during the spring and summer months!  We are unable to accommodate events outside of this time period.

What accommodation do you offer?

We do not offer overnight accommodation on-site, but there is a wide range of local hotels and B&B’s that we are pleased to recommend.

Can we have fireworks?

Unfortunately, we cannot allow fireworks as we are in a farming area.

Can we have a DJ?

We have an in-house DJ/disco at an additional cost, who will happily play your music list if required. We have noise limitations that we must adhere to and a silent disco is introduced throughout the evening as at 11pm we go silent. This is extremely popular, works very well here and is certainly an aspect that couples and their guests remember for the right reasons.

Can we have a band?

At our venue we cannot have any amplified music which includes an amplifier and microphone, therefore loud, live bands are not possible. However, you are welcome to have guitarists, a string quartet, jazz band, acoustic singers or anything else that is not amplified.
